Info for Cantorias

Brazilian rhythms, warm harmonies, merging voices: Cantorias takes you to faraway places and forgotten times. The vocalists from the band, Lilian Vieira, Femke Smit, Anna Serierse and Nina Rompa, bring close harmony from Brazil.

Traditional protest songs, well-known sambas and original songs, with a nostalgic touch of the seventies and eighties and yet completely contemporary. ‘Cantoria’ means song and colloquially ‘Cantorias’ describes an exuberant party where people come together to sing. In addition to the four singers, the band consists of musicians who are completely at home in Brazilian styles such as Bossa Nova and Música Popular Brasileira

Anna Serierse, vocals
Femke Smit, vocals
Lilian Vieira, vocals
Nina Rompa, vocals
Udo Demandt, drums
Breno Viricimo, bass, vocals

Cantorias
Vocal ensemble specialising in the performance of vocal polyphony from the Iberian Renaissance. They were selected in EEEmerging (2018), a European cooperation programme for the promotion of emerging ensembles, where they won the Audience Prize and where they were chosen to continue being part of the programme until today. They have also enriched their experience by participating in artistic residencies at La Cité de la Voix de Vézelay (2018), Ghislierimusica in Pavia (2019) or in projects such as MusaE (2018 and 2019) of the Ministry of Culture and Sport, or the renowned FestClásica circuit (2019) of the Spanish Association of Classical Music Festivals or EXCENARIO, the music catalogue of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) (2020, 2021).

Born within the ESMUC (Barcelona), Cantoría took shape at the ECOS Festival de Música Antigua Sierra Espuña (Region of Murcia) during the summer of 2016. The vocal ensemble, directed by Jorge Losana, begins to align its trajectory with the participation in festivals such as the International Young Artist 's Presentation in Antwerp (2017), the fringe edition of the MA Early Music Festival in Bruges (2017), the fringe edition of the Oude Muziek Festival in Utrecht (2017 and 2018) or the digital festival of REMA (Réseau Européen de Musique Ancienne) at the Early Music Day 2021, where they were invited to participate thanks to the recent discovery of the unpublished Totana Manuscript, recovered by the ensemble.

Their performances at the Prado Museum and the Auditori de Barcelona represent a line of continuity with respect to their previous presentations at other outstanding institutions such as the Biblioteca de Cataluña (BNC) or the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE), as well as their recent performances at international festivals such as A Cappella International Festival For Vocal Music Leipzig (Germany), Félix Urban Festival (Germany) or Festival d'Ambronay - Centre Culturel de Rencontre (France).

Currently, Cantoría is also supported by Acción Cultural Española, the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (INAEM) and the Instituto de las Industrias Culturales y las Artes de Murcia (ICA).
