Info for Orff: Carmina Burana (Live)
Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is an infectious and brilliantly orchestrated work, combining gloriously bawdy vulgarity and moments of touching beauty. The inspiration for the work struck Orff in 1935 when he encountered a vivid set of medieval poems charting the outlandish pursuits of hedonistic students and monks. Written purely for entertainment in vernacular Latin, medieval French and German, the satirical texts poked fun at what they saw as a hypocritical church, before indulging in erotic fantasy and pondering ideas of fate and fortune.
This live concert recording captures the drama of the 2013 performance at Royal Festival Hall: part of Southbank Centre’s year-long The Rest Is Noise festival.
Conductor Hans Graf (former Music Director of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and a frequent guest conductor with the major US and European orchestras) delivers a commanding interpretation and, with three outstanding soloists a live performance full of adrenalin.
British soprano Sarah Tynan is much sought-after on both the opera and concert stage. She has recorded roles in several of the Chandos ‘Opera in English’ series. The press noted of her performance here in Carmina Burana that she ‘had just the right sweetness of tone to give the final “Courtly Love” scene the sensuous quality it needs.’
„Choral articulation, exposed by the immediate recording, is practically perfect.“ (Sinfini Music)
„Superlative playing.IRR, May'14. The orchestra is the star here: Graf secures characterful electrifying playing from the LPO.“ (Classical Music)
„This is a superb issue; it captures afresh the sheer exuberance and colour of this over-performed work ... it's a recording of a live concert, and it made me feel I so wish I d been there; what greater praise can there be?“ (International MusicWeb)
„There are flashier, more sumptuous Carminas on the market, but this one nonetheless scores impressively on musical values, and pure listening enjoyment.“ (BBC Music Magazine)
