Franz Liszt inherited strong religious convictions from his father, and the influence of sacred narratives can be found throughout his compositions. Drawn from the so-called Tasso Sketchbook, the Préludes etHarmonies poétiques et religieuses were composed after the end of Liszt’s relationship with Marie d’Agoult, and include the passionately turbulent Langueur? Descriptive titles characterize many of the brief Album-Leaves, while the legend of St François de Paule marchant sur les flots depicts the saint crossing the Straits of Messina using his cloak as a sail after being refused passage by a boatman. Liszt’s famous Harmonies poétiques et religieuses has been visited in other volumes in this edition, but this is not to be confused with the Préludes et Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, which is a set of eight pieces also associated with the poetry of Alphonse de Lamartine, but entirely distinct in character and content. Including fragments, this is a further collection of Liszt rarities that offers fascinating pre-echoes of later masterpieces, exploring the composer’s wider responses to religious themes, Romantic poetry and the intensity of his own circumstances.

Roman Kosyakov, piano

Roman Kosyakov
was born into a musical family. He graduated from the Central Music School in Moscow where he studied with Farida Nurizade in 2012, and the Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory where he was under the tutelage of Vladimir Ovchinnikov in 2017. Since September 2017 he has studied at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on a full scholarship with Pascal Nemirovski.

In 2018 Kosyakov won the prestigious Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition, and was also awarded the competition’s Orchestra Prize for his performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In January 2019 Kosyakov received the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire – Musicians’ Company Silver Medal, and subsequently became a member of the Musicians’ Company’s Yeomen (Young Artists) Programme, through which he was invited to represent and launch the 2019 Hastings International Piano Concerto Competition at the House of Commons in London.

Kosyakov is a recipient of awards and scholarships from the Denis Matthews Memorial Trust Fund and Drake Calleja Trust, and is a Kirckman Concert Society artist. As part of the Fitzroy Piano Quartet, he won the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition (strings ensemble category) in January 2020. This release marks his recording debut.
