Info for Christmas Carols: From Village Green to Church Choir

A new album bringing classic carols to life under the expert direction of conductor and author Andrew Gant, marking the release later this year of his new book Christmas Carols, from Village Green to Church Choir. Everyone loves a carol—in the end, even Scrooge. They have the power to summon up a special kind of midwinter mood, like the aroma of mince pies and mulled wine and the twinkle of lights on a tree. It’s a kind of magic. In this new accompanying recording, Andrew Gant’s choir Vox Turturis bring these carols to life with captivating performances of classics such as ‘The Angel Gabriel’, ‘Adeste fideles’ and ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ as well as less-known gems like ‘Célébrons la naissance’, ‘Les anges dans nos campagnes’ and ‘Tempus adest floridum’. The CD booklet also includes a short essay by Gant highlighting some of the fascinating stories behind these works. Christmas Carols brims with anecdote, expert knowledge and Christmas spirit. It is a fittingly joyous account of one of our best-loved musical traditions.

"The acoustic of St Peter's College Chapel serves these singers well, and the recorded sound is glorious." (The Arts Desk)

„another well-planned and splendidly performed recording, eminently recommendable“ (Robert Matthew-Walker International Record Review)

„Most Christmas releases combine traditional carols with more contemporary music on a holiday theme, but Christmas Carols from Village Green to Church Choir, as the title suggests, goes in the opposite direction. The entire program consists of carols, with some of them done in such a way as to expose their roots in folk practice or presented in earlier versions than the one that has become familiar. The album accompanies a book of the same name, but it is entirely listenable without it, or as a précis of it. Really it could serve as an introduction to where Christmas carols came from and what kind of cultural background they represent. Conductor Andrew Gant, also the author of the book, puts together a program ranging from very simple versions of carols to arrangements from the 19th and 20th centuries (the church choir end of the continuum). Nothing departs far from the pieces' basic tonal structure, but there's a good deal of variety; nothing is repeated pedantically, and the program flows naturally. The young voices of the small (adult, mixed-gender) choir Vox Turturis, who don't even rate a mention on the cover, sound clean and natural. A recommended holiday item for anyone curious as to just what Christmas carols are.“ (James Manheim, AMG)
