Sheik Yerbouti ist Frank Zappas ultimatives Album. Nirgendwo ist die bekannte Zappa-Formel aus derbem Humor mit exzellenter Musik so überzeugend gelungen wie auf dieser 1977 und ’78 live eingespielten- und dann im Studio nachbearbeiteten Doppel-LP. Mit im Line-Up vertreten sind der Keyboarder Peter Wolf, Bassist Patrick O’Hearn und Schlagzeuger Terry Bozzio (Jeff Beck, Debbie Harry, KoRn). Sheik Yerbouti ist das Albumdebüt des Tontechnikers und Grammy-Gewinners Joe Chicarelli (Elton John, U2, Beck und andere). Der Albumtitel ist eine Parodie auf den damaligen US-#1-Hit »Shake Your Booty« von KC & The Sunshine Band. Bärbeißig verreißt Scheich Zappa auf dem Grammy-nominierten »Dancin’ Fool« die Disco-Welle. Peter Framptons damaliger Pop-Rock-Hit »I’m In You« bekommt auf Zappas «I Have Been In You« sein Fett weg. »Bobby Brown Goes Down« kam in den USA auf den Index und wurde ein Hit in Europas Gay-Clubs. Mit schlichten Songs (trotz akribischer Arrangements und zahlreicher Overdubs) zeigt sich Zappa hier jenseits der Klassik-Anflüge, jenseits des Jazz-Rock-Brimboriums und Freak-Theaters. Seine wahre Größe tritt zutage: die des begnadeten Rock’n’Rollers. Sheik Yerbouti ist mit über zwei Millionen verkauften Exemplaren der Bestseller in Frank Zappas Diskografie.
