Info zu Écume de mai

The Compagnie Marmouzic, Christofer Bjurström, Catherine Le Flochmoan and Hughes Germain have joined forces in the Artistic Cooperative 109, alongside Bénédicte Abélard and Constance Devol. Sabine Mittelhamer (Cie Handmaids) and Juan Perez Escuelar (Cie Singe Diesel) joined them at the start of 2020. This short introduction aims to introduce you to the pianist composer Christopher Bjurström who, as soon as we enter his website, specifies that he is a member of this “artistic cooperative”, which is, in my opinion, a real breeding ground for artists. It is by visiting his site here that we get to know this wonderful musician better, who divides his activities into 4 chapters: live music, musical performances, film concerts, compositions and stage music. Each of these is subdivided into different sections.

Regarding his record production, I must now come back to his last album, Ecume de Mai, which is superb, excellent. But I still have to give you a clarification beforehand: “The foam of May is a phenomenon characteristic of the seaside, most often in the month of May. The conjunction of meteorological phenomena (wind, water temperature, sunshine) and biological phenomena (mixture of mucus, proteins and fats emitted by marine bacteria and phytoplankton) causes an increased formation of scum, part of which may fly off towards the land, carried by the wind. The phenomenon is all the more intense as the agitation of the sea water is important, in particular during storms."

The main theme of this album is therefore the way we look at the ephemeral and what remains of it… At the origin of these compositions, nine poems which aroused the inspiration of the author: Oublieuse Mémoire by Jules Supervielle, Embrace of the World by Abdellatif Laâbi, Ariel by Sylvia Plath, Le Voyage d'Automne by Claude Roy, Cahiers by Emily Dickinson, La Cour de Bo Carpelan, and La Vitesse Foudroyante du Passé by Raymond Carver. An unusual album for the listener that I am, but I must admit that I have just made a great discovery that is worth the detour! If openness and imagination answer the call, you will find this Jazz opus simply magnificent!
