Info zu Thrust

The follow-up album to Head Hunters turned out to be another masterpiece and became just as successful as it's predecessor. The relaxed interplay goes on with almost the same lineup. Only Mike Clark replaces Harvey Mason on drums, and blends the game with ease with his solid style. Clark and Summer's synergy contributes so much to the funky favorite tune Palm Grease. Improving the sophisticated musical experimentation he started with the previous album, Herbie Hancock proves that extended free soloing can be as entertaining as catchy themes. We love the atmospherically chilled Butterfly, one of his greatest pieces of all times. Captured by the beautiful synthesizer solos, the deep bass of Paul Jackson and the amazing sound of Bennie Maupin's bass clarinet-sax duo, you just don't want it to end.

'This album is a mind-blowing adventure into high-tech funk music, with layers of melodies, rhythms and riffs spinning intricate patterns around each other to form one orgy of sound. It baffles with its rhythmical technicality but it's at the same time irresistibly catchy. The result is magnificent. This is as good as funk can get.' (progarchives.com)

'This supertight jazz-funk quintet album still sounds invigorating a quarter of a century later.' (AllMusicGuide)

'...(drummer Mike) Clark and bassist Paul Jackson are a two-headed computer disgorging off-kilter but irresistibly fat-bottomed licks; Hancock's Fender Rhodes and Bennie Maupin's reeds...dance on the ceiling....a great album: brave, risky music making...' (Rolling Stone)

'The rhythm, improvisation and feeling inspire many young musicians nowadays and hopefully will do the same in the future.' (allaboutjazz.com)
