Info zu A Garland Of Red (Mono Remaster 2023)
For his second album, John Coltrane teamed up with his Prestige label colleague Red Garland to lead a quartet on a five-song excursion, backed by a rhythm section of Paul Chambers and Art Taylor. The absence of any unnecessary instrumentalists allowed for a decidedly concerted focus on Coltrane's part, playing with equal amounts of confidence and freedom. The Coltrane composition "Traneing In" is a rousing blues, an example of the musical uniqueness of Coltrane and Garland. Although pianist Garland takes the lead from the start, the structure of the arrangement allows the tenor saxophone to build its solo seamlessly on Garland's as the intensity gradually increases, never ignoring the underlying swinging bop.
Chambers ignites the fireworks by quoting his favourite Christmas tune "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" with an exuberant run. The poignant "Slow Dance" is a dark ballad with a catchy, delicate melody set by Coltrane that first Chambers, then Garland take up before the saxophone ends it with a final chorus. Coltrane's second composition, "Bass Blues", is a typical example of Chambers' ability to mirror even Coltrane's most complex or seemingly improvised melodies. "You Leave Me Breathless" has all the makings of a love song, with long, sustained runs of Coltrane, Garland and arguably the best there is of Paul Chambers. The album ends with every bebop lover's dream - a fast, furious interpretation of Irving Berlin's classic "Soft Lights And Sweet Music".
The original album title and cover with its abstract painting was changed and revised to "Tranein' In" on later pressings to show a more consistent portrait of John Coltrane.
"Thirty-three at the time of this, his first recording as a leader, pianist Red Garland already had his distinctive style fully formed and had been with the Miles Davis Quintet for a year. With the assistance of bassist Paul Chambers (also in Davis's group) and drummer Art Taylor, Garland is in superior form on six standards, Charlie Parker's "Constellation" (during which he shows that he could sound relaxed at the fastest tempos) and his own "Blue Red." Red Garland recorded frequently during the 1956-62 period and virtually all of his trio recordings are consistently enjoyable, this one being no exception." (Scott Yanow, AMG)
