Info zu The Unknown Enescu, Vol. 2

Although Enescu gave opus numbers to only 33 of his works, he left an enormous number of pieces in varying stages of composition, from sketches and draft outlines to isolated movements and some scores that are almost complete. Working with a handful of composers and musicologists – fellow Romanians with specialist knowledge of Enescu’s style – the violinist Sherban Lupu has produced performing editions of a number of previously unknown works, heard here in the context of other Enescu rarities. One of these ‘rescued’ pieces, hiding behind the modest title of Caprice roumain, is nothing less than a major violin concerto.

Sherban Lupu
One of the world’s leading performers of George Enescu’s music, Romanian-born Sherban Lupu studied at the Bucharest Conservatory with George Manoliu Mr. Lupu left Romania to study in London at the Guildhall School of Music with Yfrah Neaman and he took lessons and master classes with legendary violinists Yehudi Menuhin, Henryk Szering and Nathan Milstein as well as with Norbert Brainin of the Amadeus String Quartet and Sandor Vegh.

Lupu has won prizes in numerous competitions such as: Vienna International, Romanian National String Quartet, Jacques Thibaud in Paris, Carl Flesch in London, Royal Society of Arts, and the Park Lane Group Contest. Subsequently Lupu came to the United States to study with Dorothy De Lay and, at Indiana University, with Josef Gingold and receive chamber music coaching from Menahem Pressler.

Mr. Lupu, professor emeritus of violin at the University of Illinois, has been artistic director of the Gubbio Festival in Italy and associate concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera. Solo appearances include The Kennedy Center, Gstaad Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elisabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, St. John’s Smith Square, Berlin Philharmonic Hall and Carnegie Hall. He has also performed the Brahms and Tchaikovsky violin concertos in live broadcasts with the BBC Orchestra and has appeared as soloist with the Northern Israeli Symphony Orchestra.

In collaboration with the composer Cornel Taranu, Mr. Lupu has finished and reconstructed the “Caprice Roumain” for violin and orchestra by George Enescu.

In the year 2000, Mr. Lupu received a lifetime achievement award from the Romanian Cultural Foundation for his efforts to promote Romanian culture and music internationally. Much in demand as a pedagogue, Mr. Lupu is a frequent member of international juries, has given numerous master classes and taught violin courses in England, Holland, Germany, Italy, Romania, Czech Republic and Poland where in July 2004 he received from the Ministry of Culture the Award for Outstanding Teaching.

In November 2002 Mr. Lupu was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the Academy of Music “G. Dima” from Cluj (Romania) and in January 2004 the President of Romania has conferred upon Sherban Lupu the title of Commander of the National Order of Merit and Service for his worldwide musical and cultural activities.

Since 2002 Mr. Lupu is the Artistic Director of the International Festival “The Musical Citadel of Brasov”, Romania.

Also, in September 2005, together with the Romanian Cultural Institute Mr. Lupu has published six volumes of previously unknown works for violin by George Enescu. The works were discovered, edited, and arranged by Sherban Lupu. Since December 2011 Mr. Lupu is President of the George Enescu Society of the United States.

In 2007 Sherban Lupu received again the prestigious “Arnold Beckman” Award from the Research Board of the University of Illinois and was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Al. I. Cuza University of Iasi, Romania. Mr. Lupu was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Grant for the academic year 2009 – 2010.

In addition to concert tours and masterclasses Mr. Lupu is presently pursuing several recording projects, such as the complete works for violin by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst and unknown works of Eugene Ysaye.

In addition he is preparing and supervising for publication an edition of Ernst’s works for Toccata Press.

Ian Hobson
Pianist and conductor Ian Hobson—called “powerful and persuasive” by the New York Times— is recognized internationally for his command of an extraordinarily comprehensive repertoire, his consummate performances of the Romantic masters, his deft and idiomatic readings of neglected piano music old and new, and his assured conducting from both the piano and the podium.

In addition to being a celebrated performer, Mr. Hobson is a dedicated scholar and educator who has pioneered renewed interest in the music of such lesser known masters as Ignaz Moscheles and Johann Hummel. He has also been an effective advocate of works written expressly for him by a number of today’s noted composers, including Robert Chumbley, Benjamin Lees, John Gardner, David Liptak, Alan Ridout, and Yehudi Wyner.

Most recently, Mr. Hobson appeared in solo recital at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, presented by Florida State University. The program, which featured works by Brahms and the contemporary American composer Robert Chumbley, also celebrated the composer Ernst von Dohnányi. Mr. Hobson has also recently released the final two volumes of his complete Frédéric Chopin edition on the Zephyr label. This comprehensive set is organized programmatically rather than chronologically. As Colin Clarke of Fanfare writes: “The sense, as the work completes, is of coming to the end of a very significant Chopin recital” (Fanfare, July/August 2016).

Mr. Hobson is known for artfully programming recital series showcasing the complete piano works of noted composers, matching the subtleties of the composer’s works for each concert. He recently completed a six-concert series at New York’s downtown venue SubCulture entitled, Sound Impressions, featuring the complete solo piano repertoire of Ravel and Debussy.

Similar artistic endeavors include Mr. Hobson’s 2015 Uptown/Downtown: Preludes, Etudes, and Variations series—focusing on outstanding examples of each genre by Fauré, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, and Szymanowski, with world premieres by Yehudi Wyner (Preludes), Robert Chumbley (Etudes), and Stephen Taylor (Variations)—as well as his performance of the complete solo piano works and chamber music with piano of Johannes Brahms.

Mr. Hobson continues his concerts as music director of the Sinfonia da Camera, a professional chamber orchestra affiliated with the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and College of Fine and Applied Arts of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where Mr. Hobson is the Swanlund Emeritus Professor of Music. He is also Professor of Music at Florida State University.

An artist of prodigious energy and resource, Mr. Hobson has to date amassed a discography of some 60 releases, including the complete edition of the works of Frédéric Chopin, the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven and Schumann, and a complete edition of Brahms’s variations for piano. Volume 9 of the series was praised by the distinguished American critic Donald Rosenberg writing in Gramophone:

Ian Hobson appears to savour the experience of rising to the challenge. The English pianist and conductor has undertaken numerous daring projects and preserved some of them on his label, Zephyr Records. His discography for Zephyr and other companies includes everything from the complete Beethoven piano sonatas and Sousa’s opera El Capitan to contemporary works. Winner of first prize at the 1981 Leeds International Piano Competition, Hobson has continued his adventures in versatility with recordings of the complete works of Chopin. The newest release in the series… takes its name ‘Cannons among Flowers’ from a quote by Schumann about the essential nature of Chopin’s music. Hobson conveys the image strikingly in the disc’s opening work, the Second Ballade. The performance juxtaposes utmost delicacy with eruptive power. Similar mastery of contrast makes Hobson’s account of the Second Scherzo memorable and affecting. His playing is intensely alive to expressive nuance, textural clarity and elastic shaping, and his sound maintains its glow even at the most torrential moments…. Hobson’s noble artistry is as vibrant and controlled in dramatic episodes as it is in music of lilting melancholy (Gramophone, July 2012)

As guest soloist, Ian Hobson has appeared with many of the world’s major orchestras; in the United States these include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra, the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Florida, Houston, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and the American Symphony Orchestra and Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico. Abroad, he has been heard with Great Britain’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hallé Orchestra, ORF-Vienna, Orchester der Beethovenhalle, Moscow Chopin Orchestra, Israeli Sinfonietta, and New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Since his debut in the double role of conductor and soloist with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra in 1996, Maestro Hobson has been invited to lead the English Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia (including an appearance at Carnegie Hall), the Pomeranian Philharmonic (Poland), the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra (Bass Hall), and the Kibbutz Chamber Orchestra of Israel, among others.

In addition, Mr. Hobson is a much sought-after judge for national and international competitions and has been invited to join numerous juries, among them the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (at the specific request of Mr. Cliburn), the Arthur Rubinstein Competition in Poland, the Chopin Competition in Florida, the Leeds Piano Competition in the U.K., and the Schumann International Competition in Germany. In 2005 Hobson served as Chairman of the Jury for the Cleveland International Competition and the Kosciuszko Competition in New York; in 2008 he was Chairman of Jury of the New York Piano Competition; and in 2010 he again served in that capacity of the newly renamed New York International Piano Competition.

One of the youngest ever graduates of the Royal Academy of Music, Mr. Hobson began his international career in 1981 when he won First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, after having earned silver medals at both the Arthur Rubinstein and Vienna-Beethoven competitions. Born in Wolverhampton, England, he studied at Cambridge University (England), and at Yale University, in addition to his earlier studies at the Royal Academy of Music.
