Though Willie Nelson gained success as a Nashville songwriter in the early '60s with songs like 'Crazy' and 'Hello Walls,' it was Patsy Cline and Faron Young's versions of those songs that reached the charts. So when producer Chet Atkins brought Willie Nelson into the studio for his own album in 1965, the record company made sure to trumpet Nelson's status as a songwriter not only in the liner notes but in the album's very title. The material, here is stunning, with Nelson's retaking of his own 'Hello Walls' and 'Funny How Time Slips Away' being particular standouts. Nelson's deep-seated cynicism toward the Nashville game, as shown in the needling 'Mr. Record Man,' found greater favor in the '70s, but „Country Willie“ is an intriguing preamble.
