Info zu Age Of Uncertainty
Now on their third LP, Athens, Georgia's Muuy Biien have developed into a cohesive band. The project, initially an outlet for singer Joshua Evans' moody ambient creations, has expanded into a fierce five-piece that has helped push Muuy Biien's sound further into explorations of hardcore, post-punk and deathrock.
Age of Uncertainty moves in a particular sonic direction, sounding more like it was written as one rather than an assortment of ideas. Muuy Biien wallow in a murky psych punk sound reminiscent of the Birthday Party or the Fall at their most accessible: bass is mixed up front, stumbling along off-balance with an intoxicated, fuzzy tone; pianos provide melodic accents for twangy guitar arpeggios and squeals of saxophone.
Though Evans does more actual singing than usual here, his vocals still prove versatile. On 'Sike Song,' his nasal snarl rides over the distorted bass like Iggy on a Stooges track. Tracks like 'In the Pits' and 'Mara' find him adopting a garage rock swagger that evokes Ty Segall, and he mumbles his way through 'Bitter Blessings' and 'Another Chore.'
The band seem to have detached from the violent exuberance of their earlier records, suggesting a more lethargic and sarcastic brand of misanthropy, and while this sense of weariness can carry over into the music at times, more often than not it's flipped into a woozy, enveloping atmosphere that frames some of the band's most accomplished songwriting to date.
'Muuy Biien have been around for most of this decade, initially known for their update on hardcore and unpredictable, high energy live shows. That spirit was captured on the band’s 2012 debut, This Is What Your Mind Imagines, but by the time of their second album, 2014’s D.I.Y. (both came out on Athens label Happy Happy Birthday to Me), their sound had gotten darker, weirder and more sparse.' (Brooklyn Vegan)
'Athens-based Muuy Biien will be releasing a new record called Age of Uncertainty via Autumn Tone on October 28, but ahead of the release, the band has shared a new track called 'Mara.' The single is a nasty, snarling track that feels like a cliche in the best possible way. You know the one—a late night full of bad decisions that's followed by some sort of hangover that you can't explain, only solve by sticking your head in a freezer. Of the song, the band points to some cult inspiration, saying: 'This is a rock song based on Alejandro Jodorowsky's El Topo.' So, this feeling makes sense.' (Noisey)
Muuy Biien
Formed in 2011, Muuy Biien was conceived as a loud, fed-up response to what some would say was a stagnant and uninteresting music scene in the band's hometown of Athens, GA. Initially the ambient project of lead singer Joshua Evans, Muuy Biien quickly expanded into a full-fledged band. Evans's hardcore ambitions were fully realized with the addition of guitarists Xander Witt and Robbie Rapp and drummer Jacob Lake.
After just a few performances with a full band, Muuy Biien already established a reputation for their intense live shows. Fans filled the room at house shows as well as established clubs, looking for a chance to be at the front of the mosh pit. At any given show you were likely to see people with bloody noses, beer-soaked clothes and gigantic smiles throughout the crowd. Athens based label, Happy Happy Birthday to Me was among the first to recognize talent in the young band. The label released their debut album, ...
