Info zu Tchaikovsky: Works for Violin and Orchestra

Exchanging roles between soloist and Konzertmeisterin, the accomplished young violinist Saténik Khourdoïan here makes her recording debut in an exciting programme with La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra and its acclaimed Music Director Alain Altinoglu. Perhaps best known to the general public for his ballet Swan Lake, the ardently Romantic composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is also much admired for his concertante works. His Violin Concerto, considered one of the most virtuosic and one of the most frequently performed around the world, was written at a time when he was head-over-heels in love with one of his students, Iosif Kotek, to whom he originally wanted to dedicate the work. The ballet Swan Lake features some of the finest pieces ever written for the violin, some of which have been selected for this album. As an encore after these two major works, the conductor swaps his baton for the piano and joins his soloist in the nostalgic dream of the Valse Sentimentale.

"Born in Marseille in 1983 into a family of Armenian origin, Saténik Khourdoïan is concertmaster of the Brussels Monnaie. Now she has recorded violin works by Piotr Tchaikovsky with her orchestra and under the direction of principal conductor Alain Altinoglu. It is a beautiful, very lyrical interpretation, soulful but not cloying, in the third movement also spirited and virtuosic but never exaggerated, so that one can speak of a very coherent performance, inspired and vital by the emphatically beautiful and characterful violin playing with a beguiling legato and dazzling colors. Saténik Khourdoïan also shines as a sensitive and charismatic interpreter in the Swan Lake pieces. In the sensitively felt Valse Sentimentale, Altinoglu holds back discreetly at the piano and lets the violinist take the lead." (Remy Franck, pizzicato.lu)

Saténik Khourdoïan
“A personality, a perfect technique, a musical sensibility that has something to say with her bow, with her fingering of rare subtlety, with her heart. Saténik is attached to the deeper meaning of the works she performs rather than virtu- osity, which, though she is naturally endowed” (Nice Matin).

Saténik Khourdoïan regularly performs as soloist and chamber music in France and abroad, in Halls as prestigious as the Concertgebouw in Amster- dam, the Jerusalem Music Center, the Salle Pleyel, Salle Cortot, Salle Gaveau, the Cité de la Musique, the Théâtre du Châtelet, Olivier Messiaen Hall of Radio France in Paris and plays with Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Juraj Valcuha, at “Antibes Génération Virtuoses” with Cannes Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Philippe Bender, the Marseille Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Friedrich Pleyer, the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra. She is invited to play at the Grand Théâtre de Provence, the Wortham Center in Houston, the Puccini Hall in Milan, the Festival de La Roque-d’Antheron, the Grange de Meslay and Aix-en-Provence Festivals, Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and touring the Middle East. She is also invited in many programs of France Musique and France Culture, “Un Mardi idéal”, “D’une rive à l’autre”, “Sur tous les tons”, “Plaisirs d’amour”...

This young artist studied violin with Jean Ter-Merguerian in Marseille Con- servatory, then joined the class of Jean-Jacques Kantorow at the CNSM of Paris. During her studies, Saténik Khourdoïan has been voted as “Classical Instru- mentalist Revelation 2009” by Adami, and won the 4th Prize in Long-Thibaud competition (2008) and 3 special Prizes (Public Prize, SACEM Prize and Gaby Pasquier Prize), in February 2008 she was awarded a 2nd Prize at YCA of New York.
