Paris Brass Band recently put the finishing touches to their forthcoming album release which features the music of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

The recording project was inspired by former MD Florent Didier and Band President Dominique Collin, and has finally come to fruition under present MD Laurent Douvre.

The twin centrepieces are the composer's major work, 'Crazy Twenties' which the band premiered at the 2022 French National Championships, as well as 'Crossing Worlds', a substantive new concerto, which was commissioned and performed by Swiss cornet star Kathleen Gaspoz.

It was recorded at the Conservatory of Creteil by Digistyle and Luc Fourneau, and produced by Thierry Deleruyelle alongside euphonium player Philippe Schwartz.

Speaking about the project to 4BR, MD Laurent Douvre said: "This album is the result of a project which has been close to all our hearts. It offered us a wonderful opportunity to work with Thierry and to showcase his music to the world.

We performed 'Crazy Twenties' at the French Championships and it was so successful that we wanted to ensure it was recorded. We thank him for his kindness, professionalism and talent, and hope that we will have the opportunity to work together again."

In response, Thierry said: "'Crazy Twenties' is the third part of a major cycle of works I'm writing for the brass band medium that will retrace the history of the 20th century.

I wanted to change the musical style that I had adopted for the first two pieces by using a much more 'old jazz' material from the era, but also combining fairly classic writing styles too."

He added: "I have so much friendship for the Paris musicians and conductor Laurent Douvre, and Kathleen is a fantastic musician. Her playing on 'Crossing Worlds' which is a major concerto of great difficulty, is simply fantastic."

Brass band is a subtle mix of popular and scholarly tradition, the music can be as festive as striking, as virtuose as lyric. Multiple colors that come with the warmth and richness of sonority give to brass band music a sound identity and a balance that leave it original and captivating.

Four time French Champion in a row, the Paris Brass Band is considered one of the main French brass band. French representative for European Brass Band Championship (EBBC) which were held in Oslo in 2013, Perth in 2014 and Freiburg in 2015, PBB gained national and international renowned. The band performs regularly in France and abroad with European tours (Scandinavia, United Kingdom, Austria, Italia…) and Asian tours.

In residence at Creteil Conservatory of Music, the PBB works actively alongside schools and cultural associations. Scholar performances, commented and public rehearsals or coaching and tutoring of young musicians, or master class are for us good ways toto offer all public an educational and artistic quality opening.

Mixing musicians from all the greatest French orchestras, students in a professionalization process and amateur musicians, the Paris Brass Band offers Mêlant musiciens issus des plus grands orchestres français, étudiants en voie de professionnalisation et musiciens amateurs, le Paris Brass Band offre a wide range of performances from concert-recital to themed shows for the delight of all.

Laurent Douvre
began his musical career by singing in a choir and playing percussion at the music conservatory of Mâcon where he is from. He continued his training by studying the trumpet, as well as the writing and analysis of musical compositions for which he received several diplomas from the regional conservatory of Chalon sur Saône.

After his literary baccalaureate (musical option), he continued to pursue a higher education at “Université Lyon II”.

Passionate about conducting orchestras, in 2012 he created the “Ensemble de Cuivres Rhône-Alpes”, for which is was awarded first place at the national competition of “Cournon d’Auvergne”.

It was in 2011 that he joined the Music of Republican Guard in Paris, which has allowed him to deepen and expand his experience in conducting orchestras.

Since 2013 he has also been conducting the Brassage Wind Band and pursuing performances with a rich repertoire, and in 2017 the rise to the rank of “Honneur“ of Confédération Musicale de France. In June 2019 the orchestra received the most prestigious award of the year in the highest division among French wind band.

Since 2016 he has conducted “Brassage Brass Band“ and is pursuing the rise of this orchestra to be recognized as one of the five best in France.

With these, he is developing an approach to recording and film making, participating in many concerts, festivals and competitions, frequently winning awards.

He has also been developing his love of teaching, and to that end he is also in charge of the orchestras at the conservatory of Bagneux.

Laurent Douvre become musical director of Paris Police Concert Band in December 2018.
