Although he was not to know it, when Franz Schubert wrote his Fifth Symphony at the age of nineteen, he had already completed more than half of his purely orchestral output. His first essays date from 1811 and include two overtures in D major as well as assorted sketches for works that remained in fragmentary form. His first completed symphonies, produced in the space of three years (1813-16), are scarcely distinguishable from those composed by others at the end of the previous century, save for an already marked penchant for unusual modulations and a no less pronounced taste for variety of timbre. Schubert was only a teenager at the time, and his compositions earned him little more than the esteem of a small circle of relatives, friends and schoolmates. ...
