Info for Peace I Leave With You - Music for the Evening Hour
In their first recording for CORO The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford, with director Mark Williams, explore the repertoire that has provided the bedrock of the college’s musical life for the last 500 years, all of which was written for the end of the day. Much music associated with evening time is naturally calm and soothing, and would satisfy those seeking transcendental beauty in the form of unchallenging ‘sound baths’, but this collection also seeks to challenge, contrasting contemporary settings with music from the 16th century. We hope, through this range of works, to capture something of that liminal space between day and night that is characterised by Evensong, and to lead the listener into that ‘peace that passes all understanding’. The album showcases works by composers from John Sheppard to Joanna Marsh, and features much-loved pieces such as Hubert Parry’s Lord, let me know mine end and John Tavener’s The Lord’s Prayer as well as new additions to the Evensong repertory such as Grayston Ives’ In pace and Piers Connor Kennedy’s O nata lux.

The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford
The Choir of men and boys is one of the three foundation choirs within the University of Oxford, although most other colleges now have their own choirs. The College was founded in 1458, and in the statutes, provision was made for the eight singing-men, four chaplains and sixteen choristers of Magdalen College Choir. More recently, an additional four singing men (Academical Clerks) and two Organ Scholars were added to the complement, and this tradition has been maintained to this day.
The Choristers are part of the College Foundation, receiving their academic education at Magdalen College School. The Academical Clerks and Organ Scholars are undergraduates at the College, reading for degrees in a variety of subjects.
The College Choir sings six of the seven sung services each week during Full Term. Away from the Chapel, they have toured Japan, USA, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Germany and France, and have appeared at the BBC Proms; later this term they will give a Christmas concert in London as part of the Choral at Cadogan series. Recent orchestral performances have included collaborations with the Britten Sinfonia, the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Since 2013, the Choir has recorded exclusively for Opus Arte, the label of the Royal Opera House; information on current releases can be found here. In the past, the Choir was involved with a number of soundtracks, including Richard Attenborough’s movie, Shadowlands, and also the award-winning BBCTV series, Blue Planet.
