Info for Peter Breiner: A Journey – Calm Romantic Piano Music, Vol. 2

Slovak-born Peter Breiner is one of the world’s most versatile musicians. He is an acclaimed pianist, arranger and conductor with compositions that are universally admired, and whose Beatles Go Baroque album (8.555010) has to date sold a quarter of a million copies. In the second of Breiner’s Calm Romantic Piano Music series (Volume 1 is on 8.574256), he again achieves the rare feat of fusing melodic beauty with genuine musical expression. These beguiling original pieces sit alongside serenely beautiful new arrangements drawn from the classical repertoire.

The second volume of ‘Calm Romantic Piano Music’ from the Slovak-born pianist, composer, arranger and conductor, Peter Breiner, offers a very diverse programme.

Each given a descriptive title, Breiner’s own ‘songs’ for piano and orchestra are composed to revitalise the dwindling numbers of quality ‘crossover’ works that we are presently enjoying. Mostly quiet and soothing music, such as the opening The Magic Goblet, and the charming Snowfall Song, and you can create your own picture for the quizzical Mama, Can You See Me? Interleaved with Breiner’s music, he has added arrangements of famous ‘classical’ works, such as his version of Faure’s Pavane, here scored for piano and chamber group. The tempo moves up in Come and Tell Me, with an added orchestral backing group for the jazzy piano, and there is an element of sadness in the cello solo featured in The Final Song. Just a Tiny Waltz is delightful, and without knowing the meaning, I much enjoyed his most extended track, Sunday Morning on Sunday, its dreamy atmosphere reminding me of my feelings on that restful day. The thought of an Elephant on a Parachute, is a very kindly picture of a funny title. Within the context of this mix of music, Handel and Haydn are treated with period respect, the main thematic melody given to the keyboard, the long disc of eighty-six minutes ending in the serenity of Bach’s Largo. Breiner conducts from the keyboard a group of musicians from London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra gathered in the Henry Wood Hall during the pandemic to work with a first class recording team."
