Info for Forests

An unconventional quartet born at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, Silent Fires reunites four young bandleaders from the European improvised music scene: singer Karoline Wallace, trumpeter-soundscaper Hilde Marie Holsen, violinist Håkon Aase and pianist-composer Alessandro Sgobbio. Their debut album “Forests” is a collective exploration around the theme of spirituality in its multiple meanings. Silent Fires performs and improvises on stage with contemporary dancer Synne Garvik, offering a multi-art experience of improvised music and realtime choreography. The band will present their new album on tour in France, Germany, Italy, Norway and Portugal.

”Spirituality” – in all its large meanings and declinations – is the inspiration of this brand new quartet born in Oslo. Silent Fires is a Norwegian-Italian electroacoustic ensemble, featuring trumpet player Hilde Marie Holsen, violinist Håkon Aase and Italian pianist Alessandro Sgobbio, who is also the composer of the music.

Karoline Wallace
is a singer, composer and arranger. She composes and arranges for her bands, for wind orchestras, choirs, string quartets, big bands.

She has a masters degree in composing and music performance from the Rhythmic Music Academy in Copenhagen with semesters done at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg.

She took her bachelor degree in jazz music performance at the Grieg Academy in Bergen and in the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

Between her studies she lived two years as a performing musician in Berlin.

Marie Holsen
Norwegian Hilde Marie Holsen has carved out something very particular and niche in music. Processing her trumpet in the electronic realm, she blends the mournful tone of the brass instrument with the explorative field of electronic music to make music that lists somewhere between jazz, the contemporary and drone music. Holsen’s music has unpicked the frayed boundaries of traditions, calling in a new generation of artists that abandoned stale and repetitive conventions in favour of establishing something unique, in the realms of contemporary music.

Holsen’s debut album «Ask» was released on the Norwegian label Hubro in 2015, and hit the shelves with critical acclaim from amongst others The Guardian, The Wire and The Quietus. Since then, she’s gone on to perform on a number of world stages, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians, while also continuing her work in the recorded field. In 2018, Holsen followed up with her second solo album, «Lazuli», also released on Hubro, and was claimed to be «an almost shockingly complete musical statement».
