Info for Rock 'n' Roll Saviour
“In recent years the term “rock ’n’ roll” has become a kind of punchline; a musical synonym for outdated gender roles, for being out of touch, for having a macho mindset. So obviously, as with so many things in the modern age, it’s high time for a complete overhaul — as The Deadnotes have fittingly titled their third album, giving the well-known catchphrase of “Sex, Drugs and Rock’n’Roll” a contemporary and long overdue update. The destructive power of rock is well-documented and The Deadnotes know it all too well, but bandmembers Darius Lohmüller and Jakob Walheim prefer to emphasize the unfathomable, yet always tangible, power of music. Despite all the clichés, there is also a fundamental truth about rock music: the songs that blare too loudly, the nights that become way too long, the lyrics that hit too true at just the right moment… all of it can save you, no matter what. Those who have felt it know it to be true. The Deadnotes have written songs that want to do just that — be your saviour.”
The Deadnotes
THE DEADNOTES
are a Freiburg, Germany-based indie-punk band. In early 2020 they released a new single taken from their new album ‘Courage’ through their own newly-established label 22Lives Records.
The powerful track ‘Ghost On The Ceiling’ deals with a personal story of “hasty decisions made for the sake of a calm conscience, which only lead to make your problems worse and don’t help you achieve happiness in the long run” explains singer and guitarist Darius Lohmüller.
The single follows on from ‘Never Perfect’, another track in which mental health plays a key theme and the release of which marked the beginning of a charitable partnership with organisations (Help Musicians / Music Minds Matter and Ni9ht-H3lps-Mental Health Support) offering help to those affected by mental health issues.
The band had intended to donate 1€ for every tour ticket and 3€ for every turquoise vinyl sold via their band shop, as well as collecting donations at live shows though the coronavirus restrictions has closed most venues in early 2020.
Recorded at Crooked Rain Recording Studios in Leeds, the album ‘Courage’ was produced by Bob Cooper (WSTR, Ducking Punches, Nervus), mixed by Beau Burchell (Saosin, The Bronx), and mastered by Mike Kalajian (Saosin, Prawn, Bouncing Souls).
Still in their early 20s, the list of achievements that The Deadnotes have racked up over the last few years is astonishing. They formed the band at just 14 years of age and haven’t taken a moment’s rest since, self-releasing both an EP and their debut album, and relentlessly touring through over 25 European countries.
Sharing the stage with Boston Manor, Don Broco, Beach Slang, The Front Bottoms, Such Gold, and many more, the band recently played their 500th live show—a remarkable feat for such a young band, and one that more than earns them their DIY stripes. To support the release of ‘Courage’ the band had intended take to the road for an extensive run of shows drawing in crowds across Germany, France, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland before coming to an end with five specially selected UK dates.
