Moments of love. A flutter of the eyelashes, a moment of eye contact. An evanescent dream that enters our everyday life and sud- denly the world continues to turn without our awareness of it. A moment of joy, which is far too short, but changes our life. In a flash, we are held hostage by our own thoughts. A touch proves unforgettable, a tender caress and a smile will gently stroke our souls. But at the very next sunrise our own longing will consume us. A moment, maybe as short as the wink of an eye, and yet it is seared on our heart. An eternity and never more shall we forget. That love which reflects our desire for primal bliss, leads us back into Paradise, to the ONE who is the source of all love. These are moments that we think of sometimes and our senses and feelings are reawakened, as if this instant, this touch were only just past.

And yet we cannot turn back time, can- not recapture that wonder of Amore, all that is left are our memories, our dreams, and their realization in art. Moments of love, words for something that no words can describe. We cannot explain them, but we can turn them into poetry or sing of them. Songs, tunes and tones bring back memories of the moment at which pain, yearning and happiness came together in the real world and left a touch of magic in our hearts.

“Listen, you lovers”, begins the aria Udite amanti by the female composer Bar- bara Strozzi. It describes the sorrows of a woman. Her pain: unbearable. Her love: an odyssey. Poetry has always been a fine art mostly narrated by the masculine gender. What about the other side, then? Give the woman a hearing! Muse of the man and source of his inspiration... mother, beloved,

strumpet and saint. Not seldom the cause of wars. As mistress, a secret power behind the man, and at other times and places mer- chandise on slave markets. Strozzi a courte- san, mother of four, sought-after singer and composer in a man’s world. Pupil of the celebrated male composers Cavalli and Cesti, adopted as the child of a courtesan of Giulio Strozzi, who wrote opera librettos for such composers as Monteverdi. Women between worlds, between Ori- ent and Occident. The Ottoman wars, tur- queries, the Levant a cultural melting-pot. Woman, a mystical being who lent wings to Orient and Occident alike.
