Info for Birds
The Tingvall Trio celebrates its twentieth band anniversary in 2023. It is particularly noteworthy that the trio has always performed with the same line-up since its founding until the present ninth album, BIRDS. In addition to the pianist and namesake Martin Tingvall on piano, these are Omar Rodriguez Calvo on double bass and Jürgen Spiegel, who is responsible for drums and percussion. And the three Hamburg-based musicians have managed to write an unparalleled success story in these many years: several ECHO JAZZ awards as ensemble and live act of the year, a total of six JAZZ Awards in gold, two Impala Awards for international sales, a whole series of No.1 Jazz Chart albums and four high placements in the German Top 100 Album Charts - definitely to be called outstanding in German jazz. With BIRDS, this development has now reached its temporary climax.
Martin Tingvall explains the title: "The album BIRDS is dedicated to the birds. They are the musicians of nature. They surround us with their music every day and can be incredibly inspiring. You just have to listen carefully. Unfortunately, we often don't seem to do that anymore, too many other sounds surround us and we get distracted. I hope this album can inspire us to perceive the environment around us differently. I myself can already observe changes in the behaviour of birds due to global warming. SOS, it is high time to stop, listen to nature and act."
As always, Martin Tingvall is responsible for all compositions, but the pieces were worked out by the trio together in rehearsals and concerts to recording maturity in arrangement and playing. And of course, you will again find catchy tunes on the album, such as Woodpecker, Hummingbird or Air Guitar. Wonderful ballads like The Day After with a bowed double bass by Omar Rodriguez Calvo alternate with pieces like Africa, whose lightness immediately grabs your ear. SOS, the call for help to finally give our earth a perspective for survival, offers virtuoso Tingvall Trio sound and a touching composition. Finally, Martin Tingvall contributes a particularly introverted moment with his solo piece Call For Peace.
The trio will present many of the new pieces on an extended European tour in 2023/24, which is already gathering momentum in June with two major festival appearances at the ELBJAZZ Festival in Hamburg and at Nils Landgren's JAZZ BALTICA in Timmendorf.

Martin Tingvall
Hej, I’m responsible for all kinds of black and white keys. I personally like different kinds of music and I hope that you can not only hear that in my songs, but also in the fantastic playing of my friends and colleagues Jürgen and Omar. Normally I compose when I am in my home country Sweden. In the little town of Snarestad in the south I have found a place of silence for myself. Here I have peace to work on new compositions and to play.
Omar Rodriguez Calvo
Hola, I am the bassist of this trio. Between Martin’s nordic melodies and Jürgen’s rhythms, I keep the us together with deep tones from my bass and my pulsating cuban heartbeat. The trio is a very important part of my musical journey; it bonds the emotions from life, everything between quiet expression and explosive fire.
Our music comes from three very different personalities, but in the end we become one: Music!
Jürgen Spiegel
I am Jürgen, the drummer. Because of my experience in musical styles other than jazz (mostly rock, pop and hip-hop www.drums-for-your-song.com) I provide rhythm for the trio from a different side. I get lyrical input from Martin and Omar and I mix it with my way of playing, which i find extremely inspiring. The challenge of playing together is very enriching: no concert is the same as the last one and I believe that the compositions provide me with so much freedom and space that, together, we always end up on new shores.
