Every situation has a silver lining. There can be comfort in knowing that all things come to an end.
Anticipating the calm will make you cherish the storm.
In his latest project, pianist and composer Jan Alexander contemplates his musical journey of the last decade. From Amsterdam to Essen to Stockholm, the music traverses peaks, valleys, structure, and chaos. Jan Alexander
Cologne jazz pianist Jan Alexander started playing the piano at the age of 7. As a teenager he devoted himself more and more to improvised music.
In recent years he has studied jazz piano in Amsterdam, Essen and Stockholm. Immersion in these different music scenes and educational systems fundamentally shaped his approach to music and teaching. In 2021, he completed his academic journey with a Master’s degree in Music (M. Mus.) at Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm.
Since 2019, he has released his debut album Of Memories To Comever, and participated in various releases as a sideman, such as Duy Luong’s band ZOUY and Renáta Hervoly’s RØNEE.
In addition to jazz piano, he is also interested in music production in other genres such as hip-hop and electronic music. After a worldwide pandemic and the subsequent standstill of life in the spring and summer of 2020, he had a lot of time to explore his own sound as a producer. As a result of this process, he released his EP It Wasn’t Meant To Be in 2020 under my producer alias j. xndr. He then collaborated with Icelandic singer Stína Ágústsdóttir, and together they released an EP called TGRSS in 2022.
Besides playing, composing and producing music, Jan teaches piano at the Offene Jazz Haus Schule, Cologne and the Musikschule Monheim.
