Info for Jindřich Feld: String Quartets Nos. 5 & 6, String Quintet

Anthology dedicated to the memory of one of the great contemporary Czech composers, Jindřich Feld, successor and spiritual heir to Martinů through his non-conformism and his francophilia, humanistic having built a language „out of time“, on the basis of Stravinsky, Bartók and then Berg without erasing his atavistic Slavonic expressionism. His chamber music repertoire is particularly fine and has created a lot of new ways in this genre.

Deceased in 2007, the regretted Jindrich Feld was and is one of the most important Czech composers of his generation. A man of great culture, an active humanist who defended democracy, a philosopher and musician, Feld wrote in diverse genres, such as opera, choral music, symphonic music, concertos, and chamber music. To pay honor to this large figure of musical creation, the recording here groups the String Quartet N°5 dating from 1979, the String Quintet with two altos from 1972, as well as the String Quartet N°6 composed in 1993 and dedicated to the Pražák Quartet. Recorded live at different concerts in 1979, 1981 and 2002, the program offers the image of undeniable musical wealth. For, as Feld himself said, he had “the conviction that ‘serious’ music should not only exalt great humanist feelings, but should maintain an impression of beauty, pleasure and joy at the same time…” The Quartet from the city of Prague, the Smetana Quartet, and the Pražák Quartet invite us to discover or rediscover these works of profound beauty, where tones blossom with infinite wisdom. In a remarkable sound recording, the scores performed here offer a unique dimension of Jindrich Feld’s chamber music by revealing a refined language contemporary composers seem to have lost.
