Info for Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen; 4 Rückert-Lieder; Kindertotenlieder (Remastered)
Mahler was a composer in which Fischer-Dieskau excelled. Few can rival him in his range and beauty of tone in conveying the heartache of the young traveler in the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. Kubelik is a most persuasive Mahlerian too, and the 1968 sound is quite excellent. The Kindertotenlieder receive a superb performance too, recorded in 1963, with Böhm providing imaginative accompaniment. The 4 Rückert Lieder complete a totally successful collection. Penguin Guide* (Song cycles) These are in truth superbly percipient performances, full of understanding and wonderfully poignant, and as Karl Böhm's accompanying is extremely sympathetic and expressive, this is a record to treasure. Gramophone, August 1964 (Kindertotenlieder and Rückert-Lieder)
"Fischer-Dieskau is the master, as Mahler - who preferred a baritone in his songs with orchestra - would surely admit had he lived long enough to hear him." (BBC Music Magazine)
"All these Mahler recordings were made in the 1960s when the great baritone's voice was in superb shape and before a tendency to over-emphatic barking crept into his singing...there's such wisdom in these performances, and the sound of DG's recording has come up very cleanly."
