Info for A Handful Of Stories

A Jazz Quintet Celebration: Renowned jazz trumpeter and composer Angelo Verploegen released his highly-anticipated album, 'A Handful of Stories,' his fifth collaboration with our label. This swinging jazz quintet project, led by Verploegen, is a testament to his versatile musical journey, showcasing his unique ability to traverse various jazz styles, from straight-ahead jazz to free improvisation.

In 'A Handful of Stories,' Verploegen takes a moment of retrospection, bringing to life a selection of original compositions crafted over the past 25 years. These compositions, designed for a variety of formations and occasions, are now reimagined by a quintet of exceptional musicians. Verploegen is joined by saxophonist Nils van Haften, pianist Marc van Roon, bassist Guus Bakker, and drummer Jasper van Hulten in this musical adventure.

The title, 'A Handful of Stories,' holds a significant meaning. This is Verploegen's fifth album with Just Listen Records, and the quintet, comprised of five members, mirrors the album's theme of reflection, celebration, and RepertoireThe album features compositions inspired by life experiences, magical performances, and moments of reflection. 'Hub's Hub,' the first track on the album, is a heartfelt tribute to the late Hub van Laar, a Dutch master trumpet and flugelhorn developer, who not only inspired Verploegen and built his instrument, but also shared a deep friendship with him. This touching composition celebrates Hub's legacy.

'Brad's Feast,' another standout track, is a lively piece written the morning after Verploegen's first encounter with the Brad Mehldau Trio's captivating performance at the Amsterdam Bimhuis. This unforgettable evening left him in a lasting state of joy, which inspired the creation of the melody and an upbeat 12/8 groove. While Verploegen has recorded the song several times in different line-ups, this marks its first quintet rendition.

'Frog and the Horizon' is an original quintet piece, inspired by a story by Max Velthuijs, known for his beloved children's books featuring animal characters. This composition narrates Frog's journey, as he overestimates and romanticizes the art of traveling, insisting on joining an experienced traveler, Rat. Their adventure takes unexpected turns, and the composition beautifully represents the contrasting moments of traveling.

These compositions, along with others on the album, are a diverse and rich collection of original works that capture Verploegen's unique storytelling through music.

Don't miss this remarkable release as Angelo Verploegen and his quintet invite you on a captivating journey through 'A Handful of Stories.' This album promises to be a treasure trove of musical experiences, blending the essence of swinging jazz with the art of storytelling, all wrapped up in Verploegen's unique style.
