Info for Dupré: In memoriam
Quasi as a supplement to the Dupré year 2021 (135th birthday, 50th year of death), the new CD recording of the Polish organist Tomasz Głuchowski reached us at the beginning of this year. Recorded in March 2021 at the New Forum for Music in Wrocław, it includes works from three different creative periods of Dupré. It begins with the four versettas on "Ave maris stella" from the 15 versettas opus 18, composed in 1919 when Dupré was substituting for the ailing Louis Vierne at the organ of Notre-Dame in Paris.
The central block of the program is formed by three works from the period immediately following, beginning in 1920, when Dupré increasingly concentrated on his international concert career. For example, the Symphonie-Passion recorded here was written as a series of improvisations during his 1924 tour of America, which Dupré worked out and notated on the train on the way to the next concert venue following the respective concerts.
The program concludes with the late work Entrée, Canzona et Sortie from 1967, whose tonal language and compositional technique testify to a new clarity in Dupré's oeuvre. Despite, or perhaps because of, the virtuosity receding into the second row, this late work is rarely heard.
The recording has been nominated for the Opus Klassik Award 2023 in the category 'Instrumentalist of the Year'.
