Info for Brahms: Four Sonatas for Cello & Piano
This recording is surprising because, in addition to the two cello sonatas, it also includes two violin sonatas by Johannes Brahms - interpreted by the cello. Transcription was common practice in the 19th century, if only to facilitate the dissemination of works at a time. Brahms himself transcribed his two clarinet sonatas op. 120 for the viola.
Having sketched his violin sonata op. 108 as early as 1886, Brahms refined it two years later at Lake Thun. The composer seems to have reached a maturity of inspiration and writing at the age of 55, the fullness of which is enhanced here by the deeper, warmer tone of the cello.
