Info for Schubert: Winterreise

Of all the classical song cycles, Schubert's 'Winterreise' is perhaps the most beloved. Baritone Michael Wilmering and pianist Daan Boertien give a new, deeply emotional charge to the music, which, in these uncertain times, seems to be a compass for a future whose contours are not yet entirely clear. Adversities are there to be overcome and in this new TRPTK release, we hear two young talents give a contemporary vision of this timeless music. A refreshing interpretation that, perhaps more than many others, directly touches the listener and takes him or her by surprise.

Michael Wilmering got both his bachelor and his master cum laude from the Conservatory of Utrecht. After his studies he worked for a year at the Opera Studio in Stuttgart. At the International Vocalisten Concours, he and pianist Javier Rameix won the junior prize, the press prize and the IVC Prize in the "Liedduo" category. In 2019 he received an Award for his creation Grenze(n)loos.

Michael Wilmering
got both his bachelor and his master cum laude from the Conservatory of Utrecht. After his studies he worked for a year at the Opera Studio in Stuttgart. At the International Vocalisten Concours, he and pianist Javier Rameix won the junior prize, the press prize and the IVC Prize in the "Liedduo" category. In 2019 he was received an Award from the Operadagen Rotterdam for his creation Grenze(n)loos.

At De Nederlandse Opera he sang roles such as: Alfredo Bracale - Caruso a Cuba, titel roll in Caliban, Goethe - Theater of the World, Conte Robinson - Il matrimonio segreto, Le Medecin - Pelleas et Melisande, Thierry - Dialogues de Carmelites en Cappadocier - Salome. At Opera zuid he sang as Junior - A Quiet place. En verder Mercutio - Romeo et Juliette (Theater of Rijeka and Teatro Alighieri di Ravenna), Restaurantmanager - Death in Venice, Kilian - Die Freischütz (Stuttgart Oper) Marullo - Rigoletto, Bob - The old Maid and the Thief, Figaro/Il conte di Almaviva - Le nozze di Figaro en Jake - Porgy and Bess.

Michael has worked with directors such as Pierre Audi, Tatjana Gürbaca, Ivo van Hove, Olivier Py, Robert Carsen and Lotte de Beer and has met conductors such as Danielle Gatti, Stéphane Denève, Patrick Fournillier, Ed Spanjaard and Edo de Waart. Wilmering likes to immerse himself in the art of song, he could recently be heard at the International Liedfestival in Zeist, his own recital together with pianist Hans Eijsackers.

Together with choreographer Peter Leung and director Monique Wagemakers, he created his own conceived performance Grenze(n)loos with the dancer Ahmad Joudeh who fled from Syria - and the Japanese pianist Kanako Inoue. This performance went on tour.

"He not only caresses the ears, but takes the listeners along in his story. If more lieder singers would give themselves that way on stage, classical singing would surely reach a larger audience."

“The qualities of baritone Michael Wilmering and his colleagues on stage provided the foundation of Grenze(n)loos, and the tasteful, artistic choices made the performance transcend the anecdotal. personal approach moved and made a deep impression."

"The performance is not a recital in the traditional sense of the word, it is charged musical theater full of meaning and eloquence."

This year he will be heard as Papageno in die Zauberflote at Opera zuid, Der Einäugige in Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Rotterdam Philharmonic with Yannick Néget-Séguin and Morales in Carmen at the DNO.
