Info for Out from Under
The Michael Barnes Octet is a Norwegian-based modern jazz ensemble showcasing some of western Norways most exciting improvisers. Michael has taken his time, but it has been worth the wait; ten years after its inauguration, the band is now releasing its debut album - Out From Under.
Originally from Australia, or Down Under as it’s colloquially known, the double-meaning of the albums title represents the timely emergence of Michael as a recording artist whilst simultaneously acknowledging his roots. Michaels music is peppered with lucid melodies coexisting with polyrhythmic intricacies and harmonic densities. Both driving and reflected, the compositions mirror Michaels multi-faceted approach to both composition and performance alike. Taking influences from reggae, afro-beat and Ethio-jazz and mixing it with contemporary compositional techniques, Michael has managed to fuse his inspiration with his aspiration culminating in something uniquely his own. Barnes is the musical director of the well respected Bergen Big Band. He has worked closely with some of Europe's leading instrumentalists and composers.

The Michael Barnes Octet
has existed in the shadows for 10 years. Now it's time to bring the band into the light! The band will be in the studio towards the end of 2020 to record their first record. The music can be described as a playful mix of melodious and rhythmic jazz. Sources of inspiration such as Charles Mingus, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington can be heard in Michael's music, but the main expression is definitely something special. Everything is composed and arranged by Michael and is characterized by dense chords and long structures without losing focus on intensity, melody and playfulness.
