Info for Mahler: Symphony No. 1
When you listen to Mahler’s First Symphony it is difficult to imagine that this youthful and seemingly spontaneous music caused its creator so much difficulty when he came to write it. Like all modern composers of his time, Mahler could not escape from the contemporary fashion for the symphonic poem. At the same time, however, he also wanted to prove that he could stand on his own two feet as a purely symphonic composer. The result of all of this was a hybrid form that blended the symphony and the symphonic poem, which he was later to regret.
