Info for Trialogue

Acclaimed jazz pianist/composer Bugge Wesseltoft renews his collaboration with electronic producer Henrik Schwarz on 'Trialogue'. This time they are joined by E.S.T. bassist Dan Berglund to form a unique trio that expertly explores where contemporary jazz meets electronic music.

When Bugge Wesseltoft and Henrik Schwarz produced their collaboration 'Duo', it was clear that their synergy was both unique within, and revitalising to, the whole genre of electro-acoustic beat-based improvisation. Now the duo becomes a trio, bassist Dan Berglund brings additional dimensions and a whole new range of improvisational possibilities, new musical conversational topics, and a completely new layer of sound, giving this project a different drive, yet retaining the spirit of the Duo project. Melody, beats, and a will to surprise - not just the audience, but themselves as well - dominate.

Moments of quasi-ambient atmosphere sit alongside driving energetic swathes of blues-inflected jamming from the future, near-metallic semi-sinister meteor storms of sound rest easily beside moments of classic jazz noire. Where other musicians have engaged in similar stylistic juxtapositions, Wesseltoft, Schwarz and Berglund set themselves apart by managing the near-impossible feat of making a perfectly coherent aesthetic, a complete musical language of their own. What fans will recognise instantly is, put simply, great music.

When some collaborations occur, it feels like Fate has been paying close attention, planning something special. On one hand: Bugge Wesseltoft, pianist, composer and pioneer of electronic jazz; on the other: Henrik Schwarz, one of the most sought after producers of electronic music who has remixed stars from Michael Jackson to Ane Brun.

Bugge explains: 'This duo feels totally organic. We are creating music on the spot, both live and in the studio. With today’s electronic tools you can really improvise with them, and Henrik is so clever with his stuff - he makes amazing music from scratch. He is doing a really kind of mellow playing, which is great because we can make this spontaneous kind of music together.

Henrik adds: 'For me this Duo is like the first words in a long conversation. The music that is coming out of this sounds very, very new and unheard to me - there is a lot to explore in the future. We have a concept when we sit down. So we know it's all different, but there's a certain kind of frame for everything. There's a starting point.”
