European minimalism: The trio that combines the clarinet with the piano and the cello forms a set with powerful and multiple expressive qualities that has seduced composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Composed in the shape of a kaleidoscope, as the first piece suggests, the original program of this disc takes us through a sound gallery riddled with unheard-of objects and where reverie and nostalgia are sifted through modern languages.

The pianist Fabrizio Chiovetta and the clarinettist Patrick Messina leave the Schumannian universe of their previous album to explore with the cellist Henri Demarquette the scores of Arvo Pärt and less known but no less sensitive Jaan Rääts and Henryck Górecki. The first of the three, inspired by one of the most touching works of Mozart (the Adagio of the piano sonata, K.280), proposes here a new arrangement. Replacing the violin with the clarinet, Arvo Pärt colors this delicate conversation with three of the subtle and velvety timbre of the wind instrument."

Henri Demarquette
born in 1970, was thirteen when he attended the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, studying with Philippe Muller and Maurice Gendron. He was unanimously awarded a Premier Prix, and worked with Pierre Fournier and Paul Tortelier before taking lessons from Janos Starker in Bloomington, USA.

Familiar with the stage by the time he was fourteen, Demarquette made his concert debut at seventeen with a recital at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris and a recording for France 3 Television with pianist Hélène Grimaud. He caught the attention of Lord Yehudi Menuhin, who invited him to play Dvorák’s Concerto in Prague and Paris with Menuhin conducting.

His career has been international ever since, taking him to many capitals in the company of the greatest French and international orchestras – most recently the Orchestre National de France, the London Philharmonic, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Paris Orchestral Ensemble, the Tokyo Symphony, the Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra, the Symphonia Varsovia, the Neue Philharmonie Westphalen – and he has appeared with his favourite piano-partners Boris Berezovsky, Michel Dalberto, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Fabrizio Chiovetta, Vanessa Benelli-Mosell or Jean-Frédéric Neuburger.

Henri Demarquette also performs an eclectic program from Bach to Galliano, in duo with the French accordionist Richard Galliano. In 2014, the duo created “Contrastes” for accordion, cello and orchestra, a composition by Richard Galliano.

In 2015, he founded a string quartet with Augustin Dumay, Svetlin Roussev, and Miguel da Silva.

Michel Legrand dedicated a concert to H.Demarquette who performs it for the first time with the Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France conducted by Mikko Franck and recorded by Sony Music.

In 2014, H.Demarquette created Vocello, an original ensemble for cello and choir a capella together with L’Ensemble Vocal Sequenza 9.3. Their program includes Renaissance pieces in relation with contemporary music. Since 2012, number of pieces has been composed for the ensemble.

In 2016, Vocello stayed as artist in residence at Collège des Bernardins.

Since 2012 H.Demarquette is regularly invited by Michel Onfray to take part in the original project called Université Populaire de Caen, together with an essayist, a poet, and a musician Jean-Yves Clément. They give informal talks about different aspects of music.

Curious by nature, Henri Demarquette regularly performs contemporary music compositions and has a penchant for rare pieces. He works closely with the great contemporary composers and has incited compositions by Olivier Greif (the «Durch Adams Fall» Concerto), Pascal Zavaro (Concerto), Eric Tanguy (Nocturne), Florentine Mulsant (Sonata) or Alexandre Gasparov (Nocturne).

His performance of Henri Dutilleux’s Concerto «Tout un monde lointain» with Mannheim’s Akademisches Orchester conducted by Frédéric Chaslin was filmed for France Europe Média with the aid of SACEM.

His open approach to music is reflected in his discography, and numerous recordings by Demarquette have received awards both in France and abroad.

He has also been awarded the «Prix de la Fondation Simone et Cino del Duca» by the Académie des Beaux Arts.

Henri Demarquette plays on "le Vaslin", cello manufactured by Stradivarius in 1725, lent by LVMH/ Moët Henessy. Louis Vuitton with a Persois bow dated 1820.
