Democrazy, the latest album from French reggae artist, Nai-Jah, is an album that extends into various continents for its musical influences, with lyrics focused upon a range of social concerns. The broad nods to the world’s musical forms make perfect sense, since Nai-Jah’s travels have made him a man of the world. Democrazy is Nai-Jah’s second album with The Kwenu Band, with an additional LP and two EP releases prior.

According to Nai-Jah, “The inspiration behind this album is both my growing up in Nigeria and France, my experiences, and where I am now as a person and as an artist. It’s about my wanting to bridge the gaps between these two cultures. I would call the album a political dance, the need to shake body and mind.”

Democrazy approaches visually, with a deliberate message. Politicians shout that people have a voice, but this album cover presents the image of a silenced man, restrictive hands covering his mouth. His eyes show that he has plenty to say, with his words trapped behind those palms.

Nai-Jah explained how he met the artist, Gran Om. He said, “During a concert in Xalapa, Mexico in February 2024, the venue’s entrance wall was covered with posters deep with meaning. Conscious posters, I would say. There and then, I told myself I must get into contact and work with this artist. A friend introduced me to Gran Om, and that was it. An artwork is the window to the album; it’s what hits you first before even listening. Here, the artwork reflects, perfectly, the meaning of the album. Political systems make believe that your voice counts.”

The music that shoulders his thoughtful messages comes from international muses. Democrazy is washed in reggae/dub riddims, Latin Caribbean textures, rap, R&B, Afrobeat, and South African-rooted amapiano. The result is a work appealing to diverse audiences.
