„Unabhängige Elemente verschmelzen in einem traumartigen Bewusstseinsstrom, der die ursprüngliche Inspiration – Virginia Woolfs Novelle Mrs. Dalloway – reflektiert und weiterentwickelt“, beschrieb das Opera Magazine Kevin Putsʼ Oper The Hours. 2022 an der Metropolitan Opera in New York uraufgeführt, entfachte das Werk Begeisterungsstürme. 2024 wird es erneut auf den New Yorker Spielplan gesetzt. Und wieder mit dem berühmten Dreigestirn der Uraufführung: Joyce DiDonato in der Partie von Virginia Woolf selbst. In den anderen Hauptrollen funkeln Broadwaystar Kelli OʼHara sowie die Sopranistin Renée Fleming. Die Aufnahme mit dieser einmaligen Crew wird nun als Welt-Ersteinspielung veröffentlicht. Der Komponist und Pulitzer-Preisträger Kevin Puts war von niemand Geringerem als Renée Fleming in seinem Vorhaben bestärkt worden, die Novelle The Hours von Michael Cunningham zur Oper umzuformen. Einen Film zum Buch gab es bereits – mit Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore und Meryl Streep in den Hauptrollen. Im Plot verknüpfen sich drei verschiedene Zeitebenen – 1923, 1949 und 1990 – auf komplexe Weise miteinander. Sängerin Kelli OʼHara beschreibt die drei durch Zeit und Ort getrennten Protagonistinnen als miteinander verbunden durch „Lebenskämpfe, Freuden und Bedauern, immer mit der Frage, ob wir das Beste aus der Zeit herausgeholt haben, die wir haben“. Und für Joyce DiDonato erzählen Novelle und Oper eine „zeitlose Geschichte – jeder kann hoffentlich einen Teil seiner selbst in der Geschichte wiederfinden“.
